S ince coming to America with my wife, Katie (a native of Columbus, Ohio), now more than 24 years ago, I have had a dream to share some of the wonders of Africa with the many friends we have made in America. Every year during the past 24 years, as we journeyed to Africa, this dream became a stronger desire.

Victoria Falls, one of the Seven Wonders of the World

Every time I marvel at the beauty of an African sunset, or at the majesty of Table Mountain with Cape Town nestled at its feet, I am overcome with a passion. When I see the magnificence of the Kalahari Desert or the Okavango Delta in Botswana, or experience my own insignificance in the presence of the mighty Victoria Falls, the passion gets stronger. When I admire the African night-sky with the stars so close one can almost touch them, I dream of once again bringing our friends here to share this passion, to show them the Africa we know and love.

K atie and I want to see you fall in love with Africa the same way we did many years ago; me as a native South African, and Katie as an adventurer and traveler in Africa. We want to share with you the life-changing experience of hearing the roar of a lion at night or the grunt of a hippo at dawn. We want to be with you in the middle of a herd of elephant, and stand with you at the southern tip of Africa where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet; where the Portuguese explorer, Vasco Da Gama first set eye on this magnificent southern part of the Dark Continent almost 600 years ago. We want to share the hospitality of the people of Southern Africa with you, give you a new understanding of the privilege of life here in the United States, and the miracle of the ecology of Africa, the amazing, magical continent. We will give you an experience which you will not find in the most exclusive travel catalogues and share with you my heritage and our love for Africa.

Cheetahs on the hunt

What qualifies us to lead an adventure such as this? I was born in South Africa of Dutch and Danish stock. My family has been in South Africa since 1684. I speak Afrikaans and English, as well as several of the indigenous languages. I studied Anthropology, and lived with the Themba tribe in the Timbavati area of northern South Africa while studying their history, music and customs. I have worked and traveled in South Africa, Mozambique, Zambia, Namibia, Lesotho, and Swaziland. On many occasions I have taken foreign visitors through my country while working for a large construction company in Southern Africa, and have conducted negotiations with government ministers and other officials in several Southern African countries. In 1998 I participated in a survival training program in Ndzalama Game Reserve in South Africa, and as a PADI certified SCUBA diver I have dived the exquisite reefs of the east coasts of South Africa and Mozambique, as well as the islands of Mauritius and the Maldives. I know Southern Africa and its people. Born in Columbus, Ohio, Katie also has traveled extensively in this area, having started a love affair with Africa as a student at Northwestern University when first she hitchhiked from Nairobi, Kenya to Johannesburg. She lived in South Africa for six years before we returned to the United States in 1978, having married in 1977.

Experiencing Africa's gentle giants… up close

In 1997 we planned and led a six-week self-drive safari through South Africa, Botswana, Namibia and Zimbabwe, and in 2001 we led a group on an exclusive safari such as this one. On all these trips I have experienced the joy of watching our guests get more and more awestruck, day by day.

T o help share this dream with more people, we have teamed up with Park East Tours in New York City, and George Kun Travel in Columbus, Ohio, since 2000. This partnership allows us to concentrate on what we want to show our friends, while leaving the travel arrangements to the experts. At the same time it provides an excellent pricing structure based on their ability to purchase these services at very competitive rates.
